Drug Uses
Proscar is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in low doses and treat prostate cancer in high doses. It is a synthetic antiandrogen. It helps to improve the symptoms of BPH like requent and difficult urination. It may also help in reducing the chance of acute urinary retention.
Usage
Following the dosage instructions of your doctor is the best way to use any medication. If you are unsure or do not remember the instructions then you may read the medicine label for more detailed information.
You may choose to take Proscar with a meal or without one once a day.
Missed Dose
Despite your best attempts at remembering, if you still miss out on a dose, then take it as soon as you remember about it. But keep in mind that you will have to adjust your next dose by spacing it out by 4 to 5 hours. If this is not possible, then the best thing to do would be to skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.
Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.
Storage
Store Proscar at room temperature in a container that is tightly closed.
Overdose
Contact the nearest emergency poison control center immediately if you suspect an overdose.
Warning/Precautions
Doctors advise against using Proscar if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or to a similar medicine called dutasteride (Avodart). Mention to your doctor before using the medicine if you have conditions like:
liver disease, or abnormal liver enzyme tests; prostate cancer; a bladder muscle disorder; stricture of your urethra; or if you are unable to urinate.
Proscar is not to be used or handled by women or children. It can be absorbed through the skin.
